Whilst Li may be common in terms of crustal abundance, this has basically no bearing on the frequency of ore deposits. Elon Musk made the same point that "lithium is everywhere" which is total nonsense. Lithium ore is less common than gold ore. BHP does not go for lithium as the current manifestation of the market is fairly new (and volatile), and they want stable growth.
