ASX-listed lithium stocks have started 2022 where they finished 2021, storming higher.
Investors continued to pile into companies linked to the battery metal on the first trading day of the year, with several lithium stocks touching all-time highs.
WA-based lithium miner Pilbara Minerals hit an all-time high of $3.505 in early trade while AVZ Minerals, which has one of the biggest undeveloped lithium deposits in the world in the Democratic Republic of Congo, also reached a record 87.5¢.
The two stocks featured in the top 10 growth stocks of 2021 as lithium prices more than doubled and investors became convinced that the production of and demand for electric vehicles is set to surge in the decade ahead.
Global Lithium, which was one of the top five floats of 2021, surged another 14.5¢, or 15 per cent, to a fresh all-time high of $1.095.
Demand for lithium, which is an essential ingredient in the batteries that power EVs, is expected to more than double to 2025 and treble by 2030.
Fitch Solutions said in a report last month that it predicted the global lithium market to remain tight in the “coming years as the green transition accelerates”.
Meanwhile JP Morgan forecasts a perpetual deficit in the lithium market to 2030 based on a compounding annual growth rate of 24 per cent.
Shares in market darling Vulcan Energy Resources, which is planning what it describes as a “zero carbon” project in Germany using geothermal power to extract lithium from underground brine, were up 51¢, or 5 per cent, to $10.91 at the open.
The jump comes after the company announced it had increased the size of its project area in the Upper Rhine region by nearly 50 per cent to more than 1000sqkm through the granting of five new exploration licences.
Recently listed, Canada-focused hardrock lithium play Green Technology Metals surged 13.5¢, or 26 per cent, to 65.5¢ at 9.20am after touching a record 68¢ in earlier trade.
Shares in Argentina-focused brine player Argosy Minerals were up 1¢ to 33¢ after it updated the market on its 2000tpa lithium carbonate plant, saying it was on-track and budget for first production by the middle of the year.
Other lithium stocks to catch the tailwind included Liontown Resources, up 9¢, or 5.5 per cent, to $1.75, Mineral Resources, up $2.10, or 3.75 per cent, to $58.10 and Allkem up 73¢, or 7 per cent, to $11.13.
