    iiNet passes DSL milestone

PERTH-based internet service provider iiNet says it now has 100,000 customers using its ADSL2+ network.

The company claimed it continued to be the largest seller of ADSL 2+ services in Australia.

"In the last six months we have been through a sustained network expansion with more than 6000 existing customers transferred over to ADSL 2+ each month and additional capacity built in to support new customer growth," iiNet managing director Michael Malone said.

iiNet's ADSL2+ infrastructure has a claimed maximum download speed of 24,000kbps, but real-world performance can vary significantly, with speeds decreasing as with increases in distance between the customer and telephone exchange in which the equipment servicing them.

iiNet has been through a turbulent time in the past few months, calling a halt to trading in its shares in April.

Trading was resumed late last month following an access and investment deal with PowerTel and a revised profit forecast that saw the expected full-year EBITDA profit drop from a predicted $40.1 million to $24.6 million.

The company's inability to deal with rapid expansion was one reason cited for the poor performance.
