    All these baby boomers that bought their houses 40 years ago never dreamed that they would be worth so much money today.

    Yeah, as it happens my dream when I was young was to be able to place a roof over the head of my future kids.

    Actually at the time there was another path that some looked down on.
    You could sign up and go on a list to get a Housing Trust rental at a good rate.
    As time went by people who did that got an option to buy.
    Lots of those houses were built on the cheap have since been knocked down and the land redeveloped at higher density.

    Sometime during the Howard Government years we moved to user pays for housing development rather than Government subsidy for new housing subdivisions.
    Social housing for workers is something that Governments try to provide these days using various private public schemes.
