I cant vouch for any of the other spyware/adware programs but as I've mentioned, there are known issues with Ad-aware and XP.

One of Johnhermans posts in the following threads makes mention of it in the following link and there are numerous references to the problem elsewhere on the net.

I recommend getting rid of it or at the very least backing up your registry. (By the way if Adaware does cause the errors its known for, you will need to rename regedit.exe to regedit.cmd when fixing as .exe files can no longer be run).
