Maybe Whitlam is seen that way in the company you keep, however I was not too young to know what was going on. Again, it seems you were in the minority of voters.
There was a huge sense of relief when he was gone. I suppose if your aim is for a fabian/socialist Australia, then you would see these types of leaders as "forward thinking".
However, to the best of my knowledge, Whitlam was generally known as the worst PM and it seems that now Gillard has taken the dubious trophy.
