Hawkie was the "drovers dog"...Fraser let an opportunity slip to deregulate the Australian Financial Markets. Hawke backed by Keating were the darlings of the Financial Markets as salaries took off in that sector. I was there saw it all happen and enjoyed every minute of it. Hawke was an absolute shoe in in 1983.
