Pump hydro is an alternative to batteries. However Pinto’s suggestion of open pit mines is probably not viable, as these open pits then to be too far from large bodies of water to pump and store the energy.
It have to be close to a major river or ocean. There are ideal site for it in Aust. The Bight, Places in the SW and NW of WA etc.
