that is "how" the oil companies asses the carrying value .......
while I (personally) agree with your comments re credit bubble(ssssssss) and short selling in the physical markets and in the derivatives markets - that is irrelevant to an oil company ...it is "prescriptive" ......same applies in the USA re SEC10 (PV10 - PDP)....
as I previously said - the writedown is IMATERAIL to the future of STO
I agree - there is "potential" value inherent in STO .......however, as I have said (more than once) - if oil stays around 30 US$/bbl ....then it wont be around inside of 12-months ......if you truly believe that oil will rebound >45us - then its probably a "speculative" buy ......
I prefer to sleep - so I own ORG .......(this is simpy my personal risk versus reward assessment of the relative merits of STO and ORG).
at least management did something to protect the downside risks ......
