I set up my own all-natural business. All products are produced by hand, no internal combustion exhaust emissions come into contact with my produce. With good marketing to a wealthy niche, I convince consumers that my products are worth an astronomical price.
I get five others to go into business with me. They all produce on their exhaust free farms. We form an organization and commit to auditing to ensure that people don't cheat the system. We set zero tolerance standards. No exhaust contaminates our products. But, even better (for better marketing!), no exhaust ever touches our property. Certification will be lost if that happens.
It is not necessary to measure a real product to check for a significant difference between exhaust free and exhaust-contaminated products. We only need to pay our certifying body for audits and tick the boxes and we will magically sell into a market that returns, say, $500 to $800 more that other 'exhaust contaminated' products.
I go to my neighbours and tell them about my exhaust free farming and ask them to respect my choice to produce in this way. I post signs, lock my gates and warn all neighbours that they should only operate their unnatural, emissions-producing farm equipment in no-wind conditions or when the wind is blowing away from my farm.
After a few years of 'proving up' my market (it's the fastest growing industry in Australia!), my neighbour harvests his crop across the road with a header that utalizes internal combustion technology. The wind is from the wrong direction.
I go to my certifying body and request to be de-certified. A scientific witness estimates the dispersion of exhaust is over 70% of my farm. The Dept of Agriculture conducts tests that detect exhaust remnants on the rocks of my paddock. My certifying body determines that most of my farm can no longer be certified 'exhaust free'.
I've got the moral high ground for being honest within my certification program. I only want what is best for my customers, who now demand this product. I label my product exhaust free and my customers expect exhaust free. In fact, the ACCC will prosecute me for false advertising or misleading and deceptive marketing if I label exhaust free when it is not.
The damages are substancial. I have lost my certification and it will be 5 years before I could possibly re-gain it. In the mean time, I have lost my market and it will be very hard to claw back the ground once I get accredited again. It will cost me millions.
I sue my neighbour for contaminating my crops and property!
...Na, never mind. I shouldn't ask people to imagine such utter insanity.
