Id definitely expect there to be a tri-state / multi-state application in some respects but as you know any logic level eventually has to be defined in a range so even when expressing simple zero/one there has to be a schmidt trigger / analogue - digital conversion that results in a clear logic level. If the resistance range is large enough there really is no reason not have a conversion matrix where you can express bits or even symbols per cell. you could effectively encode data across cells in a similar way to how data is encoded in radio transmissions. but the problem right at the bottom, which you know i cant post without bringing up, is that if you don't reliably know exactly the decay rate of the information you cannot reliably determine the value, or the reliability of the value. hence the absolute, fundamental requirement to understand how long a value written remains as written without intervention. or in other words, retention metrics.
