Iran-Australia cooperate on construction of a Zinc plant


Date: Monday 2 February 2009 Iranian Minerals Production and Supply Company (IMPASCO) and Australian Union Resources Company agreed on construction of a Zinc production plant with the annual capacity of 300,000 tons in Mahdiabad, Yazd.

Managing Director of IMPASCO, Ardeshir Saad Mohammadi said: “Primary agreements have been finalized and the official agreement will be signed in two months.”

“According to this agreement, a zinc and ingot processing plant will be built in cooperation with Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) and IMPASCO will supply the needed ore”, he added.

Saad Mohammadi said that constructional operations will be started two months after signing the contract and lasts 36 months. He continued, “The Australian company is to construct the plant in 3 phases each of which can produce 100,000 tons annually.

The project costs twelve thousand billion rials, Mohammadi estimated.

“Although Australia has been involved in some other mineral projects, this contract is unique in terms of value and scales of execution” he added.

Managing Director of IMPASCO said that considering the purity of the ore, between 5 and 7 percent, and modern system of the plant we will enjoy some advantages in zinc exploitation and ingot production.

75,000 tons of zinc exploited from the mine this year and the number will reach to 100,000 tons by the end of the year, Saad Mohammadi estimated. “We are ready to supply ore to the plants in a suitable price”, he added.
