Now you are blurbing on about language. White people also came from non-English speaking backgrounds also. Eventually by at least the next generation of migrant descendants they will speak English as their first language as occurred with the migrants that came here after the two world wars and contributed to making Australia the wonderful desirable place that it is.
Most Australians are not against or fearful of immigration but they are worried about the minority who resort to violent behaviour and that would apply across the board to anyone irrespective of where they came from.
Many of the older Italians etc that came out after WW2, particularly the stay at home mums which is what was very acceptable in those times, developed only a rudimentary knowledge of English through their lifetime. However, they contributed to the raising of their families and were decent people and their lack of fluent English should not be held against them. Their children became educated, fluent and made massive contributions towards the development of Australia.
The older men that came out had no English but they went out and cleared land for the farming community and did the hard yards. Some did bring skills such as bricklaying and other trades and they worked their butts off to provide for their families. Many started their own businesses and graduated to builders etc in spite of their non fluent English. I grant that the quality of homes built by the Italians and others of that day are not matched today. We owe a lot to those early migrants and I am certain that overall that what is still a fledgling country migrants will continue to play a big part in continued progress of Australia.
On the basis of this thread it simply represents the minority who are fearful of any difference and some are probably carrying envy towards migrants because there are so many examples of those doing well. Came out here with nothing and did extra-ordinarily well. Some of them are our most prominent Australians and have achieved global interests.

The jobs which, in the past, did not require English language skills are long gone. In the modern economy, without such skills you will forever be a drag on the Government's fiscal coffers, and the pockets of the those who actually work for a living.
