you must live in a different country to me because I am nearly in that age group (just above) and I am the only one in my peer group who has paid off his house. Nobody I know, none of my mates, siblings etc are close. The astute hard workers etc will have their house paid off at retirement and will use their super and part pensions.
If you are 75 and didn't have your house paid off at 40 you are a loser.
If you are 40 and have paid off your house, you got lucky.
