    But for a government whose modelling assumes 89 per cent of new car sales in Australia will be electric by 2030 – compared to 1.6 per cent last year – there’s a lot of potholed ground to make up in a very short time. The car industry – from dealers to motoring associations – is not persuaded anything like that is possible without radical intervention.It’s even harder when a global shortage of EVs – and surging customer demand elsewhere – turns the peculiarities of a niche Australian market into an unappealing cul-de-sac for most of the world’s biggest car manufacturers.
