no the vacuum is only applied when the test starts on the ground, the vacuum pump is in the test equipment. They now have an extra hole in the sensor which is first vacuumed to prove sensor itself is not damaged then the sensor galleries are vacuumed. You are right it would be better to do test in the air when structures are under full stress but that is years down the track, guess these sensors are accurate enough to capture any fatigue crack when yes they close up on the ground. My worry is will they have a use for these on the carbon fibre structures?
