This is a Claytons import deal
Who will want to import a secondhand car with less than 500 klms?
For a start, Aussies should be allowed to go to Europe, buy a new car exempt of local European taxes
(or have them refunded on exporting the car) and having a reasonable holiday -say 10,000ks-
and then ship the car back to Aus.
Many new cars landed new in Australia have over 100ks on the clock!
We have a Free Trade Agreement with Japan (FTA) so Aussies should be allowed to import
good used cars from Japan. For example, one can buy a 10 year ild Toyota Corolla Auto-air-steer-
with less than 100,000 ks for $2K FOB Japan. This is where the real value is.
It costs more to buy a "demonstrater" in Japan, deregister it and export it than it costs to buy brand new
unregistered. This is because dealer delivery costs and local taxes which are not 100% refundable on export
and embedded in the "demonstrator " cost.
It looks like the multinationals have done a three card trick on Mr Pyne!!!
Mr Pyne has not said that Australia will recognise Japanese and EC Safety & Emissions Standards
which meands that these cars will have to be individually certified in Aus at a cost in excess of $2500
a pot. The multinationals have blanket type approval and, as such, can land the vehicles cheaper here.
