No it's not. The point of the articles is that they create a hedge by a loss on either side of the equation. They don't care which way it goes so long as they have a win and a tax offset (loss) in the opposite direction. The only way I see they could miss out is if they short, then some amazing deal comes in AND they get paid back their notes without chance to convert. But I know little in this space.
