Peter Dunnill, a professor of biochemical engineering at University College London with a special interest in flu, warned it was only a matter of time before swine flu becomes resistant to Tamiflu. Resistance in the H1N1 winter flu bug, a close relative of swine flu, emerged in as little as a year. Professor Dunnill said: 'I think we are probably sufficiently far down the road with Tamiflu now that there is very little we can do to go back. I fear it is inevitable. 'It is a question of do we get the vaccine fast enough because Tamiflu is the crucial way of dealing with things before vaccination.' The first batches of vaccine are expected this autumn, but the complicated production process means there will only be enough for half the population by the end of this year. If the virus becomes resistant to Tamiflu before everyone is vaccinated, another anti-viral drug, Relenza, will be used instead.
