Most traders work both ways, looking for an incline or decline.
With regards to shorting it can be done a few different ways. You actually buy short stock or short your own stock. Knowing how the SP trends intraday helps making this decision and also following other factors.
IMU tends to pump up early in day and get eaten away later never finishing on the highs. By selling some of your stock and rebuying later for less you have made money whilst keeping your shares.
The other fact we almost never get an announcement during the day helps here also
Not all shorting is for long term, it can simply be to protect your assets or to offset the loss when the SP drops
