Inflation is based year on year.....
April 2021 the US saw a big jump in inflation which means that April's 8.3 percent is higher than March's 8.5 percent.
Last month was 8.5% higher than last year at 2.6%. This month is 8.3% higher than this time last year at 4.2%!
Inflation isn't going down......
