I get your drift and agree, the news covering the whole period of the downturn since mid November i.e. updates on trials, inclusion into the major indices etc did not do anything for the SP in the long term and had some scratching their heads as to why.
Of course IMU will not track the indices tick for tick and IMU will diverge from the majors at times both up and down but top down analysis is still a great tool to have in the box.
