There is actally quite large spectrum of colour blindness within the red-green colour blind population.

It can lean towards more red deficiency (protanomaly) or green deficiency (deuteranomaly). I am one of those unfortunate people and mine is somwhere in the middle. I can definitely distinguish reds and greens but when you start going into shades of colours or blending in between, I start to lose the ability to determeine what colour it is. For people reading this thinking traffic lights are an issue. This is never an issue as their is spatial differences between lights.

I'm actually also a scientist and constantly use colour scales in my collaborative work. There are a ton of good divergent color scales out there that work well for both normal sight (pffft who are they!) and colour blind people.
