I think the bigger issue with consolidation is not the process itself but rather the reasoning. In my experience the reasoning is often an attempt to reduce volatility by reducing liquidity to attract institutional investors (many of) who helped create any referenced volatility in the first instance and the subsequent liquidity their trading pattern attracts. In theory okay but only if supported by a change in the underlying fundamentals otherwise nothing changes. The pie is still the same pie.
