    With my limited knowledge, I'll have a go at this.

    Yes the dummy orders are placed in a vain attempt too manipulate the opening or closing Auctions, unfortunately a lot of retail investors take note and are sucked in by this tactic.

    I use NABTrade as my trading platform and I cannot place an order without having the funds available in my trading account. Some platforms allow you to place an order without having the funds in your trading account but they expect the funds to be available by settlement day which is usually 2 days from transaction day. This is how some investors/traders can place a buy order without having their cash tied up in dummy bids. It is also why there are a lot of bids at ridiculous values that pump up the Buy Volumes, the ASX really needs to clear up these bids, actually the ASX needs to clear up a lot of shit that manipulates the Market!
