Look at rebalancing as a separate function to the entire day of trading. Treat the rebalancing more as swapping. Various insto’s swapping shares to balance their own portfolios to fit into their holdings criteria.
So when you hear of Super funds having a “balanced” portfolio of XYZ, that’s part of what they mean as going into rebalancing time they might be too top heavy in one sector (say resources for example) and need to balance up to cover more sectors evenly.
