This could be a tree shake by someone manipulating the price to stock up before the index rebalance. I may be wrong but I think the index funds need to buy stocks to rebalance their funds either in the closing auction or after the market closes on the Friday prior to the rebalance. As they don't have much choice but to buy then it's a good opportunity for those with the funds to make a quick trade in the weeks before.
