In theory SOI and MC should not be connected, but the almost universal negative effect of share consolidations suggests that in practice they are. I have yet to see a stock that has not had an immediate fall in MC post consolidation.
Many investors appear to be overvaluing high share number companies compared to low share number companies. Like almost everything it is likely to have multiple causes, but I suspect a large amount of this effect is caused by anchoring of the earlier investors.
