Alternatively they can extend the exercise date.
I've read this line on so many options threads in the mining industry that have collapsed into nothingness for the holders, and I can safely say in my own travels no one has ever extended dates.
The company will simply let them expires worthless, and issue a new round of options with a CR.
Mark my words this will happen here too if they fail.
