Voltaire, I believe the levy is for infrastructure spending (ports/rail/roads/energy etc), not for individuals that have lost their homes in flood prone areas and I think many on here are somwhat confused over this.
However, I believe you have a point in terms of the re-building in flood prone areas but as Cyclone Tracy's lesson was the need for improvement in the type of houses being built, the govt and the community again will learn from their mistakes and ensure all risks will be dealt with in a future flood event. The town planning of yesterday was obviously full of errors.
Anyway, Mackellar's poem should be read by everyone, including all school kids once more time, so that we all realise that this country is prone to floods & drought - the beauty & the terror. This is the climate we live in and we must expect these events to happen.
