Yet its not only the elderly or even the younger immunocompromised who are at risk. AS the scientific community keep reminding us, the long term consequences are yet to be understood.
The virus doesn't just effect the lung tissue (I know you know this but I'm writing for those who don't understand the virus as well). It enters the epithelial cells via the ACE2 receptor sites. Yes these are in lung epithelium (lining of the airways), but they are even more numerous in the blood vessels (ACE is angiotensin converting enzyme which manages blood pressure).
The evidence shows that clots form in the blood vessels and have caused heart attacks, unusual strokes (most notably in children), pulmonary embolus and acute pulmonary oedema (flooding and swelling of the lung tissues), and loss of limbs through the action of clots... all of these can often be fatal and all ages are susceptible.

It is ignorant because he is ignoring the medical and scientific evidence, it is ridiculous because no Govt, other than truly stupid leaders such as Trump, would allow such appalling wastage of life and the health of the nation. Lets not forget, the infection effects lasts for months, not just a couple of days, like the flu. This means those who become ill will be off-work for at least one month at least and will require considerable sick leave over the ensuing months.
We have to be sensible about how COVID is managed and
"letting her rip" is the equivalent of sentencing thousands to death or prolonged disability. This would cost the economy much more than we in Aus are likely to experience. Businesses would be unable to function due to lack of people to work. Wages would rise as employees become significantly harder to find.
