These are essentially the same requirement. Any BHP shares NOT sold before the ex dividend date of the 25th will be listed as yours as of the record date. Any bought on or after the ex date will not get on the register by the record date. Some companies emphasise the ex-dividend date others the record date. I find the ex-date the more useful, as you do not have to work backwards from the record date to find the last date you can sell or buy, which requires knowing if there are public holidays or weekends in between.
