    Diamonds found in Flinders sampling

FLINDERS Diamonds has recovered 30 diamonds from the first tranche of a sampling program in the state's southern Flinders Ranges.
Managing director Kevin Wills described the find as "significant and highly encouraging" and said it boded well for the rest of the testing program.

The 30 diamonds were found in testing a 100-tonne sample from previously identified kimberlite targets, which are potential diamond-host rocks.

Twenty-two of the diamonds were between 0.5mm and 1mm in size while eight were between 1mm and 3mm.

The total weight of the larger diamonds was 0.37 carats.

The 22 smaller diamonds, weighing a total of 0.136 carats, comprised 15 colourless and seven in pale colours.

Dr Wills said yesterday while the results were not sufficient to sustain a mine, they were "an interesting level".

"It provides a lot of encouragement to us," he said. "The quality of the diamonds is certainly encouraging: of the 30 we have, about 50 per cent look like they could be gem quality.

"With such small numbers you can't say a lot; you need thousands to make any sort of sensible prediction, but it's just encouraging that there seems to be a mix of gem and industrial-quality diamonds."

Eight kimberlite samples weighing 100 tonnes each were being extracted and treated in a six-week program with all results due by August 31.

Flinders shares rose 0.1c to 2.7c yesterday.

    cheers,
