But back to the levy. What do you propose we do in 2012, when we have another set of disaster? Have another temporary levy? This is naive and short-sigthed.
No I think we should have a disaster recovery fund, I just don't believe it should be in the form of GST as this inadvertedly affects those who can least afford it. If we are going to have a permanent fund then an increase in tax rate is the fairest way to do it. However alot of money is being wasted unnecessarily in many ways (NBN, state specific desal plants, Myki ticketing system, etc etc). Realistically there should have been plenty of money already saved into a disaster recovery fund from our current taxes.
