"The tantalizing part is the statement that batteries from the Gigafactory will arrive in 2016 instead of 2017, and that these batteries will be used in Model S and Model X. Tesla has said the battery cells made at the Gigafactory will be both physically larger and include some improvements to the battery chemistry. JB Straubel, Tesla CTO, mentioned this in his Silicon Valley/SEEDZ Energy Storage Symposiumkeynote last May. Because the new cells will be a different size, the pack design will necessarily differ from that used with the current 18650 form factor cells."
