It would be pointless to buy the stock the day or two before as the SP would have reached it's maximum level before going ex-dividend.
So any profit you make from the dividend payout is likely to be lost in the inevitable drop in the SP post ex-dividend date (assuming you want out straight away).
If you are a long term holder then the SP with all things being equal would recover in time to it's original pre ex dividend amount), and the cycle continues.
