    Where the independents have it wrong is that they seem not to realise that a permanent levy is simply an increase in the tax rate.

    I have no problems with someone (government, opposition, independents) proposing an increase in the tax rate, so long as they say it is that - namely, an increase in the tax rate - and provide arguments which can be debated.

    I do have a problem with someone calling for a "Permanent Disaster Levy", or some similar name, and trying to get an increase in the tax rate through under another guise. That only invites laziness among politicians.

    What will we have next after the Disaster Levy? A Poverty Levy to assist the poor, a Green Levy to promote uptake of green technology, etc.

    Rather than government governing, this turns government into a series of Levies.
