Index Funds

With all of the current discussions promoting index funds, what ETF would you invest in and why?

E.g. Vanguard offer some very low MERs (management expense ratios), and investing in a fund that follows the returns of the US market will allow currency exposure.

I like the look of their VHY high yield Aus shares, as well as Vanguard 500 Index Fund tracking the S&P500.

Would love to hear some feedback and suggestions.

This is a long term position.
