And now, an opposite approach that is still horses for courses.
I caught the tail end of a Nat Geo show describing how a remote village (Tibet?) was just fitted out with solar powered micro-grids to provide lights to the village and a nearby monastery.
The children now have light to continue their schooling. Clearly a traditional power line would likely have never have gotten to this village.
A perfect solution to their needs - small scale solar. It's not 24/7 electricity but it's a start (battery storage next??).
