"We're looking at options for retrofitting the existing plant to try and reduce carbon emissions and we're also going to be looking at what the opportunities are for further development of a new plant using the brown coal resource area in the Latrobe Valley," Mr Nethercote said.

Mr Nethercote said he was excited by the prospect of two site-based trial plants, a coal drying pilot plant and a post carbon combustion capture plant.

Both trial plants involve support from governments and industry, and have the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from brown coal electricity production.
