Tarvoid, re your comments of indiginous culture pre 1788 (your post #67643653) and the common occurances of tribal warfare, rape, infanticide etc.
I have sometimes wondered why, if the Australian aboriginal culture is given to be the oldest living culture, why is it that the population back 1788 is estimated to have been 800,000 to 1,000,000 but the population of India at the same time (1800) was estimated at 168 million.
So something was contributing to the lack of population growth with our aboriginal folk. Harsh living conditions with drought and floods wiping out the food supply of nomadic groups would not have helped. But the culture that existed up to that point was probably a more important factor.
Author Daisy May Bates who studied the language and culture of tribal groups in S.A., W.A.and N.T. in the early part of the 20th. century has made the same observations (and written of them) that you refer to.
As you say, we are being told of this romantic notion of life in Australia pre 1788 without doing any due fact checking.
