KEEN to source Australian liquefied natural gas, Indian energy major Petronet is planning to bid for gas blocks in Australia’s next licensing round and wants to buy into Queensland coal seam methane projects that could be developed for LNG.
Petronet chief executive Prosad Dasgupta said his company wanted to buy 7-12 million tonnes per annum of Australian LNG, and the company wants to purchase equity in developments where possible, according to a Reuters report.
The company is also believed to be looking at taking stakes in several small-to-medium Australian gas fields, possibly with aggregation or floating LNG in mind.
Petronet is also negotiating with ExxonMobil to buy LNG from the Gorgon and PNG LNG projects.
It plans to bring this LNG through a new terminal at Kochi in the southern state of Kerala, which is expected to be commissioned in 2011.
The Indian major is also discussing long-term contracts with Qatar, Egypt, Oman, Algeria and Trinidad and Tobago.
