“There are over 4,800 banks in the US, and prior to the 2008 global financial crisis that number was north of 8,000 banks. Several smaller regional banks tend to die each year due to their highly concentrated geographic/industry risks. Specifically, about 7 regional banks have died, on average, each year since 2012. If we go back to 2001, we find that about 25 banks die on average in the US each year. There was a spike in bank failures between 2008 and 2012, when 93 institutions went under each year on average.
