The problem was caused by the response of our PM. He is right though, we all spy on each other. But, and this is a big but, the niceties of diplomacy dictate that we don't say it out loud.
Now, because it was brought out in the open, SBY is entitled to expect that Abbott will have a smooth diplomatic response and a private phone call. Failure to carry that out leaves SBY losing face in his country.
The average Indonesian would have no idea about this and would view it as an unfriendly act ( it also appears that many australians fail to grasp this also) But if the proper response was delivered in time, SBY would have responded in kind about how our two countries are great friends and so, that would be that.
We also do our spying without any other country telling us to. By the way, there are dozens of Indonesians here and they're not all on holidays. They are spying
