gz, it is believed that this movement in the plates is working it's way along the fault lines and could eventuate in a major undersea earthquake close to New Zealand which if resulting in a tsunami would be devastating to Australias east coast. The Gold Coast is particulary vunerable being built right on the beach. The plate beneath the continent of Australia is continually moving northwards at about 2 cm a year and pushing under the Asian plate which reaches from Sumatra to Fiji then down through NZ, so it is reasonable to expect that similar events as we have already seen off Indonesia could eventuate right along the fault line. Interestingly, just recently an expert on volcanos declared that those volcanos dotted along the south western Victorian coastline are not extinct but given the relatively short time since last erupting, 20,000 years, they are overdue to erupt again.
