The one thing that would stop Indonesia invading is our joint security agreement with the United States. Basically if either country is invaded the other country will help defend it.
The US takes this very seriously and has stated it unambiguously in regards to the Philippines and encroachments by China into disputed territory. It can also be seen I how it came to the aid of Kuwait when it was invaded by Iraq.
This is why we must maintain the US relationship, they have been a long time allay and we have fought together during numerous conflicts. Those suggesting we ditch the US for China (e.g. Paul Keating) need to keep this in mind and ask would the Chinese come to our aid and fight by our side to defend out country?
