just doing some research .. seems currently "Toyota and BMW have done a lot of research, and now only make PM Synchronous / Reluctance motor hybrids. Reluctance motors have the best power density of all designs but suffer from torque ripple. IIRC Toyota motors are up to 63% Reluctance"
