Short summary: Researchers found that the body is overproducing abnormal proteins called amyloid and tau. In turn, these produce a molecule called MEG3. MEG3 then causes brain cell necroptosis (cell death), therefore, Alzheimer's disease. Researchers managed to block MEG-3 and rescue the brain cells.

I don't have access to the full article and do not know how they blocked MEG3. Interestingly, there is some research linking over-expression of FTO to the level of Tau and certain type of AD ("Collectively, our evidence demonstrated that FTO is critically involved in insulin defects-related AD ") [0] and MEG3 ("Moreover, we first demonstrated that the demethylase fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO), which was decreased following ischemia, regulated MEG3 expression in an m6A-dependent manner by affecting its stability [...]") [1].
