Chemotherapy is highly selective to cancer cells, but the dose of chemo is pushed to the highest level that can be tolerated by the patient. Any drug will cause off-target damage if pushed to the maximum tolerated dose - the old 'dose makes the poison'.
There is a way of using chemo drugs that is non-toxic to patients called metronomic therapy. It is really interesting approach that doesn't get the clinical attention it really deserves.
