Just like on the Harbour Bridge where you will be able to cross without the ETAG, likewise in AFC....you wont be able to travel with the SCARD....

Metro Unveils Express Lanes at Faregates

WASHINGTON (AP) - Expect changes at some Metro faregates starting Monday with the addition of express lanes for SmarTrip users.
The express lanes will accept only the rechargeable plastic SmarTrip cards and not traditional paper cards at five stations.
Metro is testing the express lanes program at the New Carrollton, Vienna, Bethesda, Pentagon City and Anacostia stations. Officials say all are high-traffic locations with many SmarTrip users.
Metro says the express lanes should allow 32 customers to go through the gate each minute, compared with the 22 customers able to get through a regular faregate.
If the pilot program proves successful, Metro may introduce express lanes at more stations.
